The Orangeburg Massacre:Forever Etched in History

South Carolina State University is not only a place where many have earned their degree, but its place where history was made. The Orangeburg Massacre refers to the shooting of protesters by South Carolina Highway Patrol Officers in Orangeburg, South Carolina near South Carolina State University on the evening of February 8, 1968.

Although I attend South Carolina State University and learned about it my Freshmen year, creating this video allowed me to look at it in a deeper context. I'm glad I was able to do this and learn more about this powerful event that took place in Orangeburg, South Carolina. There is even talks about an upcoming Orangeburg Massacre movie.

Television...For Better or Worse?

Television, where would we do without it? It has not only shaped pop culture, but it's shaped society. From the clothes we wear to way we talk. Television is and always will be a prominent thing in the world we live in. Personally, I love television. It’s the first thing I turn on when I get into my room, it’s always on and even when I fall asleep it’s still playing in the background. From Comedy to Drama, I enjoy it all. However, there are a few things that I've noticed and don’t particularly like about modern day television. First things first…reality television has taken over! This decade is most definitely the reality decade. We went from “The Cosby Show,” “Family Ties,” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” to “Keeping up Kardashians” to “Love and Hip Hop.” During the late 80’s , 90’s and even early 2000’s era there were scripted shows that featured successful friends and families going through the everyday struggle of life while teaching us lessons. Television was positive and of substance. The characters were role models we could relate to, but now most of the people who are on television don’t even deserve to have their own show. It seems as if they give shows out to anyone these days if they think it’s going to bring ratings. I mean, how many “celebrities” need to show us their everyday life? None. I miss when television had characters and content of substance and gave me something to take away at the end of each episode. And with all of the reality television, we've lost that. Maybe one day we’ll get back to basics. Until then we’re stuck with Kim, Kanye, and all of the Football and Basketball wives.
